The 22 EXSENCE DC (22エクスセンスDC) is a baitcasting reel from Shimano's EXSENCE line -- the brand's dedicated seabass (シーバス) system. Per Shimano's official product page, this generation introduced the NEW 4x8 DC EXSENCE TUNE brake system for markedly more precise brake control, along with the MGL Spool III. Max drag and line capacity were also increased versus the prior model, making it more versatile -- including the potential to go up against pelagic fish (aoiso) on occasion.

The drivetrain

The new 4×8 DC EXSENCE TUNE brake gives markedly more precise control over the cast than the previous generation, paired with the MGL Spool III for a light take-off; increased max drag and line capacity add a little more headroom for bigger fish and heavier lures.

What it's built for

Built as Shimano's dedicated seabass system reel, for casting hard lures and soft plastics around river mouths, structure and current lines, with enough drag and capacity in reserve to occasionally handle pelagic fish (aoiso) sharing the same water.

How it fishes

Work the reel at seabass pace — steady retrieves through current seams punctuated by twitches and pauses — leaning on the DC brake's fine tuning to keep casts clean into wind around bridges and breakwaters.

Spools and spares

Pair with a seabass-specific baitcasting rod and 12–20 lb fluorocarbon or 20–30 lb braid with a fluorocarbon leader, sized to the lures and structure being fished.
