Description

The 21 ENGETSU (21 Engetsu/ENGETSU) 100/101 is a two-speed baitcasting reel from Shimano's ENGETSU line -- the brand born specifically for tairaba (tai-rubber) fishing for red seabream (madai). Per Shimano's official ENGETSU brand overview, the line was built around lures that sink and are wound back at a steady pace, and it has pioneered features such as digital-counter models and fall-lever models made specifically for this style of fishing.

Information

The drivetrain

A two-speed baitcasting reel purpose-built for tairaba, designed around lures that sink and are wound back at a steady, unbroken pace — the drivetrain is tuned to keep that retrieve smooth rather than to maximise raw casting distance.

What it's built for

Built specifically for tairaba fishing for madai over structure and drop-offs, where a lure is dropped to the bottom and wound back at a constant speed to trigger a bite on the fall or the retrieve.

How it fishes

Wind at a steady, unbroken pace from bottom to the surface, shifting between the two speeds to match current strength and drop depth; PG and HG model options let anglers pick the gearing that keeps a comfortable steady-wind cadence.

Spools and spares

Pair with a tairaba-specific boat rod, PE0.8–1.5 braid and a fluorocarbon leader of around 3–5 号, matched to typical madai grounds.
