Description

The METANIUM (METANIUM) is Shimano's lightweight, technical all-round baitcasting reel. Shimano's official page describes a one-piece magnesium Core Solid Body paired with the low-inertia Magnum Light Spool III for a light take-off and a smooth, extended cast, giving it the versatility for cranking, pitching and light-rig work alike. A super-high-strength brass drive gear was added for extra toughness while holding the reel at the same 175g weight as the previous generation.

Official spec table: 6.2 gear ratio, 5.0kg max drag, 175g weight, 34/19mm spool, 12lb-100m / 14lb-90m / 16lb-80m / 20lb-65m nylon capacity, 66cm retrieve per handle turn, 42mm handle, 10 ball bearings + 1 roller bearing.

Information

The drivetrain

The one-piece magnesium Core Solid Body removes flex between the frame and level-wind, so the reel feels stiff and precise under load, and the Magnum Light Spool III spins up with very little resistance for a light, quiet take-off on the cast. At 175g it sits low and balanced in the palm, so long sessions of pitching or cranking do not feel like extra weight in the hand.

What it's built for

Built as an all-round technical baitcaster, the 20 Metanium suits cranking, pitching and light-rig work in the same session rather than one narrow technique, and its salt-resistant build extends it to light inshore baitcasting for bream and flathead as well as bass. Its light spool and smooth take-off make it a reasonable option for finesse presentations that heavier baitcasters struggle to cast cleanly.

How it fishes

The 10 ball bearing plus 1 roller bearing drivetrain feels smooth through the retrieve stroke, with 66cm of line recovered per handle turn, enough for both a slow, controlled crank and a faster pickup on a pitch. The brass drive gear adds durability under sustained drag pressure without adding noticeable weight over the previous generation.

Spools and spares

Pairs well with a 6'6" to 7'2" M to MH fast-action baitcasting rod, spooled with 12 to 16lb fluorocarbon for bass work or 30 to 40lb braid with a 16 to 20lb fluorocarbon leader for estuary bream and flathead, giving a balanced outfit for cranking and pitching alike.
