The swimming action

On a straight retrieve the Monster Shot (S) tracks with a tight side-to-side roll, and the moment the retrieve pauses it settles into a slow, off-balance rolling fall that mimics an injured baitfish losing its footing. The heavy through-wire body keeps it tracking true at speed, and a low centre of weight holds its attitude through hard one-pitch jerks.

When to throw it

A heavy-duty sinking pencil built for rock shores, river mouths and jetties where casts beyond 100 metres are needed to reach working fish. Its low centre of gravity and water-grabbing face cope with heavy tackle without losing distance or action, suiting large pelagics and tuna as well as general rock-shore and offshore sessions.

How to work it

Work it on a straight wind for searching water, or add sharp one-pitch jerks to trigger the rolling, off-balance fall that draws reaction strikes from following fish; it also skips cleanly across calm water on a low, fast rod sweep.

The setup it likes

Pairs with a 9'-10' MH to H seabass or hiramasa spinning rod rated to around 60g, a 4000-5000 reel loaded with PE2-3 and a 30-40 lb fluorocarbon leader, matched to its 100 m cast rating. Back the drag off slightly for close-range work around structure, and check the leader knot regularly given the abrasive ground this style of fishing covers.
