Information

The swimming action

The Hardcore Heavy Shot (S) is a sinking pencil built for exceptional casting distance, with a small lip that grips the water for a stable, controllable retrieve just below the surface, even at speed, and a rolling shimmy fall on the pause.

When to throw it

Suited to seabass anglers fishing rocky shorelines, surf and river mouths where distance is the priority; its strong range-keeping ability also lets it double as a search bait in the way a minnow would. Overcast conditions and a bit of surface chop generally improve results, since the lure is less likely to spook fish holding shallow.

How to work it

A fast, straight retrieve covers water quickly, while slowing down and pausing lets the rolling shimmy fall trigger a strike; in calm or low-activity conditions a slow, gentle action also works. Change the retrieve speed through the cast to find what triggers fish on the day, since preference can shift between sessions.

The setup it likes

Suits an 8'6"-9'6" M to MH seabass spinning rod, a 4000 reel, PE1.5-2.5 braid and a 20-30 lb fluorocarbon leader, matched to its 90 m cast rating. Back the drag off slightly for close-range work around structure, and check the leader knot regularly given the abrasive ground this style of fishing covers.
