The swimming action

Mebapen Mebaru is a small floating pencil-minnow that sits with a slight nose-up posture and gives a subtle rolling wobble on a slow retrieve, staying easy for mebaru to track in low light.

When to throw it

Built for night sessions around harbour lights, breakwaters and structure where mebaru (rockfish) hold close to cover, especially in the cooler months when they sit higher in the water column.

How to work it

Fish it dead slow just under the surface, pausing often; short twitches followed by a stall usually draw more strikes than a continuous retrieve.

The setup it likes

Suits a light mebaru/aji rod (UL), a 1000–2000 spinning reel, 2–3 lb fluorocarbon or PE0.3–0.4 with a short fluorocarbon leader.
