Description

The 2020 Head Shaker 5 is a 5.0in shad-tail swimbait produced by Kenta Onishi, built around a shad tail whose joint shape, thickness and angle were tuned so it kicks on the lightest flow at a super-slow retrieve yet stays stable and true at speed, driving a distinctive head-wobbling action. A near-flat side profile with a popper-cup-style dish at the front of the body grabs and pushes water for extra thump, and back and belly slits (with an internal rib on the back slit) mark the hook position for a quick, hidden set. This 5in size uses Evergreen's 2020-renewed, slightly softer material dosed with a concentrated New Special Formula shrimp, squid and baitfish scent, and carries a marker showing the ideal hook-exit point when paired with the Glass Ripper skirt.

It holds a stable swimming posture across the widest range of retrieve speeds, from a dead-slow no-sinker crawl to a fast wind, which makes it equally effective on a weighted hook rig or as a swim-jig trailer where precise depth control matters. It carries FECO Eco Tackle certification for JB/NBC tournament use.

Information

The swimming action

The paddle tail kicks even on the lightest current at a dead-slow crawl, and keeps the same steady head-wobbling action at speed. The near-flat body and dished front push water for extra thump, and the tail's joint geometry stops it rolling out or losing rhythm across the full retrieve range.

When to throw it

Suited to open water and grass edges where bass are keyed on shad or similar baitfish, from clear lakes to stained water. Works year-round but is particularly useful in cooler water when a controlled, slow retrieve on a weighted hook is needed to trigger reluctant fish.

How to work it

Fish it on a weighted swimbait hook or as a swim-jig trailer, holding a steady retrieve speed rather than working it erratically. Depth is set by hook weight and retrieve speed rather than the bait itself, so slow the wind down in cold water and speed up when fish are active.

The setup it likes

A medium-power baitcasting rod with 12-16lb fluorocarbon suits most swimbait-hook presentations, dropping to spinning gear with 8-10lb line for lighter heads. Pair with a 1/4-3/8oz swimbait hook or light jig head depending on the depth and speed required.
