Information

The swimming action

A swim jig built around a 4/0 hook for slip-through performance, designed to hold its swimming line and range through cover rather than deflecting off it. A steady swimming presentation like this gives bass a moving target to track and commit to, rather than the stop-start rhythm of a bottom-hopping jig.

When to throw it

Covers water from shallow structure to deep flat weed beds, suited to active bass keyed on a swimming presentation rather than a bottom-hopping jig. Swim jigs earn their keep whenever bass are feeding actively and willing to chase, particularly around the edges of grass, wood and rock where a snag-resistant retrieve pays off.

How to work it

Fish with a steady swimming retrieve at a pace that keeps the skirt pulsing, adjusting depth by retrieve speed and rod angle rather than pausing on bottom. Keep the rod tip up and the retrieve smooth and continuous, feeling for the difference between the jig ticking cover and a fish loading up on the line.

The setup it likes

A medium-heavy baitcasting rod, a baitcaster geared for a steady retrieve, 15-20 lb fluorocarbon or 30-40 lb braid suit swimming this jig through cover. A reel geared for a fast, steady retrieve helps keep the jig swimming at the right depth without constant winding effort through a long cast.
