Description

The Shimano Stella 2500S is the finesse-to-light-spin size in Shimano's flagship Stella spinning reel family. Shimano's specification chart lists the 22 Stella FK 2500S at a 5.1:1 gear ratio, 4 kg maximum drag, 205 g weight and 12/1 bearings.

It suits premium light plastics, small hardbaits, finesse presentations and general estuary or freshwater spinning where smooth start-up, controlled drag and refined line lay matter. The shallow 2500S spool is a strong match for light braid with a fluorocarbon leader.

Best matched with: a light or medium-light spin rod, 6-12 lb braid and leader strength matched to cover.

Sizing
2500S is the shallow-spool finesse size — 205 g, rated for light braid (PE 0.6-0.8 fills it nicely) and 4 kg of drag. Step up to a C3000 body only if you need deeper line capacity.

WHY IT WORKS

Key features

InfinityXross Gearing

InfinityXross Gearing

A widened, cross-cut gear tooth profile spreads cranking load more evenly across the drive gear, extending main-gear durability.

DuraCross Drag System

DuraCross Drag System

Stacked DuraCross carbon washers give up to ten times the drag durability of felt while retaining a smooth, consistent feel.

InfinityDrive Transmission

InfinityDrive Transmission

A redesigned drive shaft and gear interface inside the magnesium HAGANE body improve winding power transfer through the retrieve.

InfinityLoop Spool Lip

InfinityLoop Spool Lip

A reprofiled spool lip smooths the line's release path off the spool, cutting friction for longer, more stable casts.

What makes it different

Built to fish, not just to sell

The drivetrain

A magnesium body around Shimano's flagship drivetrain: Infinity-series gearing and a DuraCross drag washer stack rated to 4 kg, running on 12+1 bearings at 205 grams.

What it's built for

The 2500S is the JDM finesse workhorse size: shallow spool for light PE and fluorocarbon, at home with jerkbaits, finesse rigs and light estuary work.

How it fishes

The 5.1:1 ratio picks up 75 centimetres per crank, an even pace for slow-rolling and staying in touch with the lure without racing it.

Spools and spares

JDM lineups run shallower spools and more size variants than export versions. Spare spools are generation-specific, so check compatibility before ordering parts.

Straight answers

FAQ

Is the JDM version different from the US or AU release?

Often, yes. JDM releases can differ in spool depth, weight and handle options, and the Japanese lineup is usually broader — including sizes and models never exported.

Will spare spools from my current reel fit?

Spool compatibility is per generation, not per model name. Check the model year and size code against the spool before buying — the model code is listed on every reel.

What size should I choose?

As a ladder: 1000–2500 for finesse and light lines, 2500–4000 for general lure work, 4000 and up for heavy or salt duties. Match the size to your line and water first.

PG, HG or XG — what's the difference?

PG is a slow, powerful gear for cranking. HG is the all-round high gear. XG is the fastest retrieve for picking up slack quickly — higher speed trades away winding torque.

What warranty or service do imported reels have?

There is no local service centre for a JDM reel. Repairs and servicing go back to Japan, usually with a fee and a multi-week turnaround — weigh that before you buy.

Can I still get spares for older JDM-only models?

Often, yes — Japanese makers keep parts lists for older models, and some spares are stocked here. See the spares and custom parts collection, or ask before you order.
