Description

The Dappy Firefly Squid 3in (ダッピーホタルイカ 3インチ) is Nikko Kasei's soft-plastic imitation of hotaru ika (firefly squid), formulated with an intensely-scented squid-gut (ika-goro) blend and Nikko Kasei's fish-attractant compounding technology. It is made from the ultra-soft, high-float "Dappy" material for maximum take when a fish bites.

Its size and shape were developed from verified result data, and the buoyant material offsets the weight of the hook and rig underwater, giving a natural movement, helping the lure stand up in the water, and reducing snagging. It targets sea bass, chinu (black sea bream), rockfish, grouper species (hata), nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), tilefish (amadai), kinmedai (splendid alfonsino), pelagic fish (aomono), catfish, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass, and is also used as a trailer on tenya and tairaba rigs.

The swimming action

The buoyant Dappy material offsets the weight of the hook and rig, so the Firefly Squid rides up and undulates rather than lying flat, helping it stand proud in the water and shed light snags on structure.

When to throw it

Suited to sea bass, chinu, rockfish and other bottom and structure-oriented species, and doubles as a trailer on tenya and tairaba rigs when a scented squid profile is wanted over a bare hook.

How to work it

Fish it on a slow lift-and-fall over structure, or as a trailer worked with the tenya or tairaba's own drop-and-wind retrieve, letting the buoyant tail do the work rather than hard rod action.

The setup it likes

Pairs with a light-to-medium rockfish or tairaba rod, a 2500–3000 size spinning reel, and PE1–1.5 line with a 6–10 lb fluorocarbon leader depending on the rig.
