Information

The swimming action

A ring-grip body shape and balanced belly weighting are built for an ideal underwater posture and increased buoyancy, so the bait sits and falls in an easy-to-inhale position with deep ribs adding extra vibration to improve hook-up rates. The increased buoyancy is a deliberate counter to a standard plastic's tendency to sink too fast for cautious light-game fish, giving anglers more control over how slowly the bait falls.

When to throw it

Aimed at aji (horse mackerel), mebaru (Japanese rockfish) and light game fishing in general, it suits harbour walls, jetties and light-tackle marks fished after dark or in low light, when a small, easy-to-eat profile draws more committed bites. It suits the same harbour, jetty and breakwater marks as any light-game plastic, and is worth reaching for specifically when standard-buoyancy baits are falling too fast for cautious fish to commit.

How to work it

Fish it on a light jighead with a slow fall or gentle lift-and-fall, letting the balanced posture and rib vibration hold a fish's attention through the take rather than working it on a fast retrieve. Match jighead weight carefully to the conditions, since WAFT's balanced buoyancy is designed to be fine-tuned by weight choice rather than by retrieve speed.

The setup it likes

A light aji or mebaru spinning rod, a 1000-2000 reel, PE0.2-0.4 braid and a 1-2 lb fluorocarbon leader suit this small light-game plastic on a 0.4-1.5g jighead. A very light jighead, sized to just overcome the bait's buoyancy, gets the most out of WAFT's slow-fall design for aji and mebaru.
