Information

The swimming action

A compact spintail jig with a rear Colorado blade, built for a stable, balanced attitude in flight and a steady thump-and-flash on the retrieve rather than an erratic, hard-to-predict action. The balance keeps the blade spinning cleanly at a wide range of retrieve speeds, from a slow crawl to a fast, searching wind.

When to throw it

Seabass, bream (chinu) and flathead around river mouths, harbour structure and sandy or rocky bottom where a searching, long-casting lure is useful. It suits sessions covering open ground quickly, or working a channel edge or drop-off where several species might be holding on the same stretch of bottom.

How to work it

Cast and work a plain straight retrieve or a slow hop-and-fall along the bottom. The blade spins from the first turn of the handle, so bites can come immediately after the cast lands, and a pause during the hop-and-fall often draws a strike as the blade flutters on the drop.

The setup it likes

A L-ML spinning rod matched to a 2000-2500 size reel suits the 13g weight and keeps the blade spinning through a wide range of retrieve speeds. PE0.6-1.0 braid keeps casting distance and feel for the blade thump, and an 8-12lb fluorocarbon leader is enough for seabass, bream and flathead around structure.
