A blend of TORAYCA M40X, T1100G, M46J, M40J and T800S carbons gives a blank with fast recovery and a down-lock reel seat for a firm forward grip, built to turn a grouper's first dive back toward cover before it can reach it.

What it's built for

Aimed at kijihata (redspotted grouper) and areolate grouper holding tight to structure around rocky shores and breakwaters, where the fish must be stopped within the first metre or two or it is lost in the rocks. It earns its place in the rack for exactly the situations outlined above, rather than as a general stand-in for other gear.

How it fishes

Work soft plastics and small swimbaits close to structure with a slow, deliberate presentation, and be ready to apply maximum pressure the instant a grouper takes, since hesitation lets it bury itself in cover. Small adjustments in timing and pace through the retrieve often make the difference between a follow and a committed strike.

The setup it likes
