Description

Diplomat（ディプロマット）is the flagship of Abu Garcia's long-running area-trout Diplomat series. Blanks use Toray T1100G carbon built with Abu Garcia's TAF (Triarchy Force) construction — 100% carbon CPC blanks, a DPH ultra-thin high-density ply structure, and an NS (Natural Straight) taper — aimed at increasing rod strength, torque and flexibility for tournament-level area trout fishing. Abu Garcia describes the blanks as keeping the slow taper typical of area trout rods while adding a sharp casting feel and very high sensitivity to subtle bites.

The lineup covers five models: the DPMS-612ULS solid-tip rod built for micro spoons and small plugs; the all-around, long-casting DPMS-612UL; the power-focused DPMS-602LS for faster hook-ups and landing; the DPMS-5102L+ for minnowing and bottom-based lures; and the DPMS-602L-ES, a special model for ester line with small-diameter guides and a light-action taper for spoons, small plugs and minnows. All models use a straight cork grip and 2-piece spigot-joint construction; every model except the DPMS-602L-ES is fitted with Fuji TORZITE guide rings on a titanium frame, while the DPMS-602L-ES uses an AT-frame guide with a SiC tip to reduce wear on ester line.

How it fishes

Retrieve slow and steady with pauses for spoons and small plugs, and work minnows with a jerk-pause cadence on the dedicated minnowing model; the ester-line special model suits fine, light presentations thanks to its softer taper and small-diameter guides. Watching the line and rod tip closely through the retrieve helps detect even the lightest of bites before they are lost.

The setup it likes

Pair with a small 1000-2000 spinning reel, 2-4lb fluorocarbon or ester line depending on model, and a short, fine leader for clear, heavily-pressured pond water. Fine-tune line and leader strength up or down slightly to suit local conditions and the average size of fish encountered.
