Description

The Nishine BQ Otama is a tadpole-shaped bass lure — its Japanese name literally means “tadpole” — built around a distinctive swimming action from Nishine's Hiroshi. Bass were striking it so aggressively and swallowing it so deep that a standard treble hook risked injuring the fish, so it ships instead with a purpose-built double hook developed with Ichikawa Hooks, the “Kamakiri Double”.

It's designed to be worked slowly: anglers are advised to wait until they feel the full weight of the fish before setting the hook, rather than reacting to the first strike. The BQ Otama is supplied in six colourways, each finished with the double-hook rig.

The Otama is a tadpole-shaped bait built around a distinctive kicking swim, with a body profile that draws aggressive, deep strikes from bass rather than a subtle sipping take.

When to throw it

Suited to largemouth bass around cover and open water where a compact, lifelike tadpole profile is wanted, particularly when fish are keying on small forage.

How to work it

Work it slowly and let a striking fish fully load up before setting the hook, since bass often engulf it deeply; the purpose-built Kamakiri Double hook is designed around this deliberate hookset rather than a fast reaction strike.
