Description

The Killer Bug 23 is an ultra-compact topwater crank built as a surface "must-take" weapon that doesn't miss even light pecking bites. At just 23mm overall length, it sits with most of its body submerged at rest thanks to a deep-draft floating posture, which lets it draw a strike from fish that showed interest in a topwater but wouldn't quite commit. A deliberately weak-buoyancy setting also helps it hook up on soft, pecking bites for a high hook-up rate.

Its action is a brisk, wide wobble on the surface and just under it: a wide face and rip push water hard, giving this small body a strong presence despite its size. The basic approach is to draw attention with the light "plop" splashdown sound of a beetle hitting the water, stay 2-3 seconds to create a bite window, then crank briefly to wobble and appeal again before staying once more — alternating retrieve and stay is the key. It can also be fished as a waking bait on a dead-slow retrieve with the rod tip up, or twitched in tiny shakes to imitate a struggling insect on the surface.

Specs: 2.3cm total length, 1.3g weight, floating, 0-0.1m dive range. Ring/snap size #1 at the hook eye; ships with a #6 single hook.

Information

The swimming action

At just 23mm the Killer Bug 23 sits with most of its body submerged at rest thanks to a deep-draft floating posture, producing a brisk, wide wobble on and just under the surface from a wide face and lip that push water hard.

When to throw it

Built as a surface 'must-take' weapon for light pecking bites, its deliberately weak buoyancy setting helps it hook up on soft takes that a firmer floating crank would miss.

How to work it

Draw attention with the splashdown, stay 2-3 seconds to create a bite window, then crank briefly to wobble again before staying once more, alternating retrieve and stay; it can also be fished as a waking bait on a dead-slow retrieve or twitched in tiny shakes.

The setup it likes

An area trout rod around 5.5-6ft, ultra-light power, with a 1000-2000 reel and 2-3lb fluorocarbon or PE0.3 braid suits this 1.3g topwater crank, with a soft-enough tip to walk the bait without moving it too far on each twitch.
