Description

The Ecogear Mebaru Shokunin Minnow SS is a bite-sized, 38mm (1-1/2″) soft plastic minnow from Ecogear's Mebaru Shokunin line, developed specifically for mebaru (rockfish) anglers in collaboration with rockfish specialists from across Japan. Each pack contains 12 pieces.

Its compact profile is useful when target fish are inactive or when retrieving from deeper water, and its stable flight motion gives it great castability for probing structure at range.

Information

The swimming action

The bite-sized, compact minnow profile is built for a stable, controlled fall and flight rather than an aggressive swimming action, giving mebaru a small, natural target that is easy to intercept even from a distance. That kind of natural, unhurried presentation matters most in clear, calm water where fish get a long, close look at a bait before deciding whether to eat it.

When to throw it

Useful when mebaru are inactive or holding in deeper water, where its compact profile and good castability let it probe structure at range that larger baits can't reach as easily. It is worth carrying a small spread of jighead weights and colours to cover the different current strengths and light levels you meet across a session.

How to work it

Rig on a light jighead and work it with a slow retrieve or gentle twitches through mid-water, letting the stable profile do the work rather than adding aggressive rod action. Keep the rod tip low and watch the line closely, since bites from light-game species often show up as nothing more than a faint tap or a slight change in tension.

The setup it likes

A dedicated mebaru rod around UL to L power, a 1000-2000 reel, 2-4 lb (PE 0.2-0.4) main line and a 2-4 lb fluorocarbon leader suit the light jigheads this minnow shape is fished on. A soft, forgiving rod tip helps cushion light hooks and fine leaders so fish stay pinned all the way back to the net or rock ledge.
