Ecogear Kijihata Hog 3

A bulky, crustacean-style body with moulded arms is built to aid casting distance while the arms create fluttering wave vibrations in the water, appealing to predators that feed on shrimp and crab rather than baitfish. That kind of natural, unhurried presentation matters most in clear, calm water where fish get a long, close look at a bait before deciding whether to eat it.

Aimed at kijihata (grouper) and other predators feeding around rock and reef where crustaceans are a key food source, fished from the bank or a boat close to structure. It is worth carrying a small spread of jighead weights and colours to cover the different current strengths and light levels you meet across a session.

Fish on a Texas rig with slow drags and pauses along the bottom, letting the arms flutter as the bait settles; most bites come when the bait is left still or crawled slowly past cover. Keep the rod tip low and watch the line closely, since bites from light-game species often show up as nothing more than a faint tap or a slight change in tension.

A medium-heavy rockfish or grouper rod, a 3000-4000 reel, 12-20 lb main line and a 20-30 lb fluorocarbon leader suit fishing this bulky bait tight to structure. A soft, forgiving rod tip helps cushion light hooks and fine leaders so fish stay pinned all the way back to the net or rock ledge.
