Description

The Ecogear Jukusei Aqua Katsu Mebaru Minnow 1.6 is a 42 mm soft plastic minnow from the Jukusei Aqua range, a hybrid bait-and-lure material selected specifically for targeting mebaru. Its body carries many small ribs for extra visibility as it moves through the current, while a flat tail keeps it working even in weaker flows, and its stable shape gives it a high level of castability.

Supplied pre-soaked in Ecogear's preservation liquid to keep the plastic supple and scent-active, it comes 18 pieces to a pack in this single Koiwashi Pro Blue Glow colourway.

Information

The swimming action

Many small ribs along the body add visibility as it moves through the current, while a flat tail keeps it working even in weaker flows, and its stable shape gives it a high level of castability for such a small bait.

When to throw it

Selected specifically for targeting mebaru (Japanese rockfish), it suits harbours, breakwaters and rocky shorelines fished after dark, where mebaru hold in slack pockets and weak current close to structure. It's best fished after dark around lit areas, breakwaters and harbour structure, the classic conditions in which mebaru move up to feed close to the surface and shallow cover.

How to work it

Fish it on a light jighead with a slow, steady retrieve, letting the flat tail keep working even where current is minimal, which is typical of the slack water mebaru prefer. A near-motionless retrieve, barely faster than the current itself, usually draws the most confident takes, since mebaru tend to strike a bait that looks like it's barely trying to escape.

The setup it likes

A light mebaru spinning rod, a 1000-2000 reel, PE0.2-0.4 braid and a 1-2 lb fluorocarbon leader suit this 42mm minnow on a 0.4-1.5g jighead. A very light jighead and fine fluorocarbon leader keep the presentation subtle enough for mebaru feeding in the calm, current-light water this minnow is designed for.
