A straight body produces a very natural swimming action even in faint currents, while slits along the body let it bend easily in a fish's mouth, increasing the hook-up rate on a light bite. Because the action relies on the body itself rather than an added tail, it keeps working convincingly at the very slow retrieve speeds that faint-current aji fishing typically demands.

When to throw it

Selected specifically for targeting aji, it suits harbours, jetties and light-tackle rock marks where a natural, slow-moving presentation is needed to convince cautious fish feeding in light current. It's well suited to calm harbour and jetty marks where current is minimal, since that's exactly the situation its slit-body design and natural action are built to handle.

How to work it

Fish it on a light jighead with a slow, steady retrieve or a gentle lift-and-fall, letting the straight body's natural action work even where there's barely any current to help it along. A slow, near-motionless retrieve usually outperforms anything faster, and the slitted body means a light bite is enough to trigger a fold that helps drive the hook home.

The setup it likes

A light aji spinning rod, a 1000-2000 reel, PE0.2-0.4 braid and a 1-2 lb fluorocarbon leader suit this straight worm on a 0.5-2g jighead. The lightest jighead that still reaches the fish's depth keeps the natural action intact, since added weight can stiffen the fall and reduce the body's slow-current movement.
