The Ecogear Jukusei Aqua Katsu Aji Komushi 1.7″ is a hybrid bait-and-lure soft plastic worm from Ecogear's Jukusei Aqua range, measuring 43mm and supplied 18 pieces to a bulk pack. Its ringed body creates an extremely subtle wave action, while the slim profile is built for a slow fall speed to increase the number of bite chances.

Designed specifically for aji fishing, it comes into its own in tough conditions where fish are keyed onto small bait such as ami shrimp and refusing larger offerings. Available here in 7 colourways.

The swimming action

A ringed body creates an extremely subtle wave action, and the slim profile is built for a slow fall speed, increasing the number of bite chances compared with a faster-sinking straight worm. That slow fall is a deliberate trade-off, giving up some casting distance for extra time in the strike zone on each drop, which matters more than distance in most aji fishing.

When to throw it

Designed specifically for aji fishing, it comes into its own in tough conditions where fish are keyed onto small bait such as ami shrimp and refusing larger offerings, typically around harbours and jetties after dark. It comes into its own specifically when standard-sized plastics are being ignored, signalling that fish have keyed onto very small natural prey and need a matching profile to respond.

How to work it

Fish it on a light jighead with a slow fall or gentle lift-and-fall, letting the subtle wave action and slow sink speed hold in the strike zone for longer than a standard worm. Resist adding a swimming retrieve on top of the fall, since the ringed body's subtle wave action is tuned to work best on a controlled drop rather than a steady wind.

The setup it likes

A light aji spinning rod, a 1000-2000 reel, PE0.2-0.4 braid and a 1-2 lb fluorocarbon leader suit this small profile on a 0.5-1.5g jighead. The lightest practical jighead for the conditions keeps the fall as slow as possible, which is the main lever available for improving strike rate with this bait.
