The swimming action

An extremely soft material lets fish hold on longer when they inhale it gently, widening the hook-up window, while a non-salt compound gives it a slower fall speed than a standard plastic so it hangs in the strike zone for longer.

When to throw it

Purpose-built for horse mackerel (aji) fishing, it suits harbour walls, jetties and light-tackle marks where aji feed cautiously and a slow-falling, easy-to-eat bait draws more bites than a faster-sinking alternative. It's a strong choice specifically on pressured harbour marks where aji have already been caught on standard plastics and have become cautious about anything that sinks or feels unnatural too quickly.

How to work it

Rig it on a jighead and work it through the fish's depth with a slow fall or gentle lift-and-fall, letting the slower sink speed and soft material do the work of holding a fish's attention. Resist adding extra movement beyond the fall itself, since the slower sink speed is the main feature doing the work, and over-working it can undo the advantage the soft material gives.

The setup it likes

A light aji spinning rod, a 1000-2000 reel, PE0.2-0.4 braid and a 1-2 lb fluorocarbon leader suit this soft plastic on a light jighead in the 0.5-2g class. A light, sensitive rod tip helps detect the gentle bites typical of cautious aji taking their time to fully inhale a slow-falling bait.
