The swimming action

A slightly flat body creates a slide-fall action on the drop, while small ribs along the body and tail produce fine vibrations that mimic smaller baitfish, giving the bait a natural presence even on a straight fall. Because the action comes mainly from the fall rather than a swimming retrieve, it reads convincingly to fish even when there's little to no current to help move the bait.

When to throw it

Developed specifically for horse mackerel (aji) anglers with colours chosen by aji specialists across Japan, it suits harbour walls, jetties and light-tackle rock marks fished after dark or in low light when aji move shallow to feed. It also earns a place in a boat-fishing kit for vertical presentations over structure, where the same slide-fall action and scent profile work as well at depth as they do from shore.

How to work it

Fish it on a jighead sized to the current and depth, using a slow lift-and-fall or a straight fall on a semi-slack line to let the slide action and fine vibration work; the plastic itself carries scent and flavour to encourage fish to hold on.

The setup it likes

A light aji spinning rod (aji-ing rod), a 1000-2000 reel, PE0.2-0.4 braid and a 1-2 lb fluorocarbon leader suit this small profile fished on a 0.5-2g jighead. Carry a small range of jighead weights, since matching weight to depth and current has more effect on strike rate with this bait than any change in retrieve style.
