FLAG GRUB (フラッググラブ) is Buddy Works' standard curl-tail grub soft bait for flatfish (hirame), with body volume calculated for casting distance and appeal, and a wide grub tail that keeps working across every retrieve speed from ultra-slow to fast. The tail's motion is large but its water displacement is small, so it appeals to fish mainly through visual effect — Buddy Works recommends rotating it with the stronger-water-push FLAG SHAD to widen your approach.

The swimming action

FLAG GRUB uses a wide grub tail that keeps kicking across every retrieve speed, from a bare crawl to a fast wind, with the emphasis on visual flash rather than water push. It reads as an actively swimming baitfish at any pace, useful when hirame are holding at different depths and moods.

When to throw it

A versatile choice for hirame and flounder over open sand, gutters and light structure on Japanese surf beaches, suited to a wide range of conditions since its action holds up from dead slow to fast retrieves. Works well as a searching bait when covering ground to find active fish.

How to work it

Work it on a straight retrieve at any speed the grub tail keeps kicking, or add an occasional pause to let it settle. Buddy Works suggests rotating it with the higher-water-push FLAG SHAD to cover both a subtle and a stronger presentation on the same session.

The setup it likes

Rig on a jighead around 15–21g depending on the 5 inch size and surf depth, fished on an 8–9'6" surf spinning rod, a 3000–4000 reel, PE 1–1.5 braid and a 20–25 lb fluorocarbon leader. Step the jighead up in wind or current so the grub tail still kicks properly on the retrieve.
