Information

The swimming action

A slim, realistic profile echoes small crustaceans and goby rather than the bulkier standard Bug Ants shape, keeping wary black bream from being spooked while still carrying the same multi-leg water-catching design. Because chinu are notoriously line- and profile-shy in clear, shallow water, the slimmer build is a deliberate trade against the bulkier standard Bug Ants shape used for less cautious species.

When to throw it

Developed specifically for black bream (chinu) anglers with colours chosen by bream specialists across Japan, it suits structure, harbour walls and rock marks where chinu feed cautiously on small crabs and gobies. It's best fished around structure and rock marks at low light or on a moving tide, when chinu are more confident about feeding close to cover and less easily spooked.

How to work it

Fish it on a jighead for a natural sinking presentation, or Texas-rig it to work snaggy structure; keep movements slow and deliberate to match the slim, natural profile chinu expect from real prey. Let it sit motionless on the bottom for longer than feels natural before the next lift, since chinu often need extra time to commit to a bait that looks this realistic.

The setup it likes

A light chinu spinning rod, a 2000-2500 reel, PE0.6-0.8 braid and a 4-8 lb fluorocarbon leader suit this 60mm bait on a light jighead. Fluorocarbon leader in the lighter end of the recommended range helps keep the presentation as natural as possible for a species known for refusing anything that looks or feels wrong.
