Information

The swimming action

A flat body with a complex multi-leg design catches water to create strong presence and appeal, with overwhelming width relative to its length giving it a bulky, crustacean-like profile that reads clearly to structure-hugging fish. Because it relies on fall and subtle lifts rather than a swimming retrieve, its action reads convincingly even in the near-still water typically found tight against rock and reef structure.

When to throw it

Designed to work for a wide variety of target fish around rock, reef and structure, it suits bottom-hugging presentations where fish are keyed on crabs and other crustaceans hiding among cover. It's a dependable year-round choice on any rock, reef or mixed-bottom mark, and particularly useful when fish are keyed on crabs, shrimp or other small crustaceans rather than baitfish.

How to work it

Best rigged on a jighead and worked slowly along the bottom with lifts and drops, letting the legs and flat body do the work rather than fishing it on a fast, continuous retrieve. Keep contact with the jighead through each lift and drop so a light take isn't missed, since Bug Ants is frequently eaten on the fall rather than during any deliberate movement.

The setup it likes

A light-to-medium rockfish spinning rod, a 2000-2500 reel, PE0.6-1 braid and a 6-12 lb fluorocarbon leader suit the Bug Ants across its 2-4in size range on a bottom-bouncing jighead. Size the jighead to hold bottom in the day's current without needing constant re-casting, since a bait that drifts away from structure loses most of its effectiveness.
