Description

The Balor 90 is a 90 mm, 13 g sinking pencil developed with Eclipse pro staff angler Yasuhisa Maeda, working the 0–40 cm zone just under the surface. Its warped body and rear-biased fixed weight boost rising performance and give it casting distance said to rival the Drift Pencil 90, while a shallow-runner-style head shape grabs water and telegraphs current strength back to the angler's hand.

At medium-to-fast retrieve it delivers a light, pattering swing with a loose tail beat that settles into a pure roll as you slow down, and raising the rod tip or speeding up lets it wake right on the surface — a combination suited to bachi, inako and haku patterns and to shallow, snag-prone water.

The swimming action

Balor sinking pencils sit rear-weighted so they lift toward the surface even at a slow retrieve, delivering a roll-dominant slide with the tail beat and dart intensity varying by size and retrieve speed. Slowing the retrieve favours a smoother roll; speeding up adds an irregular tail-slide or pattering swing.

When to throw it

Suited to a wide range of seabass fields where a slim, naturally-swimming pencil is wanted over an aggressive topwater, they cover typical sardine, anchovy and juvenile mullet patterns as well as trickier seasonal patterns like halfbeak in autumn and ragworm in deep winter.

How to work it

Fish them on a slow, steady retrieve for the natural roll-dominant action, or bump the pace to introduce an irregular tail-slide that can trigger a following, hesitant fish into striking. Raising the rod tip lets the smaller sizes wake right on the surface.

The setup it likes

Match the rod power to the model: a light-to-medium seabass spinning rod for the 65 and 90, stepping up to medium-heavy for the 130, with a 2500-3000 reel, PE0.6-1 braid and a 10-16 lb fluorocarbon leader. Check the split ring and hook point regularly, particularly on the smaller 65 and 90 sizes where light wire is used to keep the lure balanced for its slow-lift action.
