Megabass Pop-X

Designed by Yuki Ito

The popper that made every other popper look old-fashioned

  • Patented side-stepping tungsten balancer blends a popper's spit with a walking bait's roll in one lure
  • Gill-slit system vents water on the pop for a softer, more natural "bio-sound" than a standard concave face
  • Hand-finished paint and nearly 300 colourways released over the years, so there's a match for any water clarity

What makes it different

Built to fish, not just to sell

The swimming action

A fixed tail weight keeps the nose high for an easy pop on a slack-line twitch, while a spherical tungsten balancer up front swings side to side as the bait sits, adding a subtle walking roll between pops. The gill slits release water on the chug rather than just splashing it, producing a softer, more organic-sounding disturbance than a plain-faced popper.

When to throw it

Calm to lightly rippled water in warm months, around isolated cover, docks and shad-heavy flats at dawn and dusk when bass are keyed on the surface; it also draws reaction bites in gin-clear water where a louder popper would spook fish.

How to work it

Short, sharp downward twitches on a slack line make it spit and roll in place; work it slowly with long pauses over isolated cover, or walk it in a tighter cadence across open flats — let the rings fully die down before the next twitch on wary fish.

The setup it likes

A 6'6"-7' medium-light to medium spinning or casting topwater rod with a parabolic tip loads well for the short twitches; 10-14lb braid or 10lb fluorocarbon keeps the bait riding high without sinking the delicate gill sound.

Fun facts about this lure

Introduced in 1996 and still one of the best-selling topwater poppers in Japan and the US three decades on
The internal gill system was designed to imitate the sound of water passing through a baitfish's gills, not just a splash
Credited to Megabass founder Yuki Ito, whose original prototype reportedly triggered instant strikes in testing
