The swimming action

A D-Bullet weight-shift system gives the Kono Flat long casting distance and a stable swimming posture even on spinning tackle, despite its size. A flat-sided, horizontal floating body responds to light rod jerks with a rhythmic, stable flashing dart action rather than a wide, erratic dart.

When to throw it

A big-bait option for sea bass, it suits river mouths, harbours and open coastal water where large fish are feeding on sizeable prey and a bigger silhouette is needed to draw a reaction strike from fish that ignore standard-sized lures.

How to work it

Work it with light rod jerks and pauses to trigger the rhythmic dart-and-flash action, keeping the retrieve unhurried so each pause reads as a hesitating baitfish. Between jerks, hold the rod tip still so the dart reads as a genuine change of direction, giving a following fish time to close in and strike.

The setup it likes

A big-bait-rated spinning rod (heavy power), a 4000-5000 reel, PE2-3 braid and a 30-40 lb fluorocarbon leader are appropriate given the 145g casting weight and the 3/0 hook. Given the size of fish this class of lure is built to draw, check hooks, split rings and knots after every take, and land big fish with a net rather than lifting by the leader.
