The Buddy Works FLAG TANUKI (フラッグたぬき) is a soft plastic lure for flatfish (hirame/flounder) from Japanese surf-lure maker Buddy Works, stocked here in the 4in (8.0g) size.

It mimics a small baitfish fluttering left and right like fish tail fins, giving strong appeal with light resistance for cast-and-retrieve fishing, with notably superior casting distance within the FLAG series. Sold in packs of 5.

The swimming action

FLAG TANUKI flutters left and right like a small baitfish working its tail fins, giving strong visual appeal with only light resistance against the retrieve. That low resistance is what gives it noticeably better casting distance than other lures in the FLAG series.

When to throw it

Suited to hirame and flounder fishing on Japanese surf beaches where casting distance matters, such as working a low-tide gutter or reaching a distant current line. A solid all-round choice for cast-and-retrieve fishing over open sand.

How to work it

A straightforward cast-and-retrieve bait — wind it back at a steady pace and let the tail's fluttering action do the work, adding an occasional pause if fish are following without striking. Its light resistance means it can be worked faster than bulkier soft plastics without losing action, which helps when covering distant water.

The setup it likes

Rig on a jighead around 15–21g, fished on an 8–9'6" surf spinning rod, a 3000–4000 size reel, PE 1–1.5 braid and a 20–25 lb fluorocarbon leader. This outfit balances the casting distance the bait is built for with enough backbone to work it properly.
