The Buddy Works FLAG CURL (フラッグカール) is a soft plastic lure for flatfish (hirame/flounder) from Japanese surf-lure maker Buddy Works, stocked here in the 5in (8.1g) size.

A fat body paired with a thin curly tail produces a subtle, fluttering tail action for conditions where fish avoid strong vibration, mimicking a small baitfish swimming unguarded. Sold in packs of 5.

The swimming action

FLAG CURL pairs a fat body with a thin, curly tail that produces a subtle, fluttering action rather than heavy water displacement. It reads as a small, unhurried baitfish rather than something announcing itself, which suits hirame that are wary of strong vibration on a slow retrieve.

When to throw it

Best worked on clear or lightly coloured surf and beach ground when hirame are following bait closely rather than reacting to noise and flash. Useful in calmer conditions, bright light or heavily pressured water where a subtle, natural profile out-fishes a louder bait.

How to work it

Fish it on a slow, steady retrieve or a gentle lift-and-fall, rigged on a jighead sized to the water depth and current. Keep movements smooth, since the tail's fluttering action does most of the work without any added rod action.

The setup it likes

Rig on a jighead of roughly 15–21g to suit surf depth and current, fished on an 8–9'6" surf spinning rod, a 3000–4000 reel, PE 1–1.5 braid and a 20–25 lb fluorocarbon leader. Match jighead weight down in calm, shallow conditions and up when current or wind pushes the bait off line.
