Information

The swimming action

The fat body wraps and pushes water on a jerk, giving strong wide-range drawing power that carries well across open, shallow flats. It then settles into a minimal, twitchy finesse action anglers call nechi-nechi, a slow, almost stationary wobble that closes out a following fish without pulling the lure away from a wary bream.

When to throw it

Black bream (kurodai) topwater sessions over shallow flats, rock edges and current lines where fish are holding high in the water and looking up. It suits the warmer months when bream move shallow to feed on the surface, particularly around dawn, dusk and low-light periods when they are more willing to commit.

How to work it

Work sharp jerks to walk it wide and draw fish from distance across open water, then slow right down to small twitches and long pauses once a fish is following, to trigger the take. Patience through the pause matters more than speed, since most strikes come as the lure sits almost still on the surface.

The setup it likes

A L-ML spinning rod matched to a 2500 size reel suits the light, twitchy retrieve this pencil is worked with. PE0.6-0.8 braid keeps enough feel for subtle rod work, and an 8-12lb fluorocarbon leader is enough to handle bream around structure without being so heavy it deadens the lure's finesse action.
