Description

The Eclipse Howeruler Rau50 is a 50 mm sinking metal vibe weighing 1/2oz, rigged with a #10 hook and a #2 split ring. Billed by Eclipse as the smaller sibling of the Howeruler Rau60, it keeps the same search-oriented casting range in a size intended to draw fewer refusals from wary fish under heavy pressure, and is aimed at seabass along with tachiuo and other blue-back species.

As a compact metal vibe it sinks quickly and can be worked with a lift-and-fall or steady retrieve, letting it search through the water column efficiently even in tricky conditions.

Information

The swimming action

A compact, full-metal vibe body sinks quickly and casts a long way for its size, working with either a lift-and-fall or a steady retrieve to search efficiently through the water column rather than holding to one narrow band. Being solid metal rather than a lipped hard bait, all of its action comes from the retrieve and jig stroke.

When to throw it

Aimed at seabass along with tachiuo (hairtail) and other blue-backed species, the Rau range suits searching open water, harbour walls and river mouths where a fast-sinking metal bait is needed to cover depth quickly, especially under heavy fishing pressure. Its long cast for size also earns it a place searching unfamiliar marks before settling on a slower presentation.

How to work it

Work it with a lift-and-fall through the water column to cover different depths on successive casts, or wind it back steadily near a known depth once fish are located; the smaller sizes are useful for drawing fewer refusals from wary fish.

The setup it likes

A light-to-medium seabass spinning rod, a 2500 reel, PE0.6-1 braid and a 10-14 lb fluorocarbon leader suit these compact metal vibes across the 40-60mm size range. A rod with a fast tip helps drive the small, fine hooks home on the strike, and a wire trace is worth adding when tachiuo are mixed in given their sharp teeth.
