Description

MAGORUBBER (マゴラバ) is a rubber jig developed by CLUE together with pro staff angler Miyuki Ochiai specifically for magochi (flathead). It grew out of Ochiai's early interest in applying bass-style rubber jig design to boat fishing for magochi, from a time when jig heads and vibration baits were the standard approach.

The jig uses an original hook shaped around research into magochi's bite and mouth structure, with the hook keeper mounted on the underside of the head to open up the gape. This listing is the 28g (60mm) size; CLUE also offers a 35g (63mm) version.

Pair it with a vibra-tail or curly-tail worm trailer and work it along the bottom with a drag-and-bump retrieve to draw magochi strikes. It can be fished from a boat as well as cast from the surf or a pier/breakwall.

The swimming action

MAGORUBBER pairs a shaped rubber-jig head with a vibra-tail or curly-tail worm trailer, giving a soft, bottom-hugging drag-and-bump action rather than a swimming retrieve. The hook keeper sits on the underside of the head to keep the gape open for a solid hook-set.

When to throw it

Built for magochi (flathead) fished from a boat, surf, pier or breakwall over sand and mixed bottom where flathead sit in ambush. It suits the same bottom-contact grounds traditionally worked with jig heads and vibration baits, giving another presentation for the same water.

How to work it

Work it along the bottom with a drag-and-bump retrieve: lift, let it settle, and drag it a short distance before pausing again. Keeping regular bottom contact is the key trigger, since magochi strike from an ambush position rather than chasing a fast-moving bait.

The setup it likes

Pair with a boat or surf rod rated for bottom jigs of this weight, a 3000-4000 reel, PE 1.5-2 or 20-30lb main line, and a 30-40lb fluorocarbon leader to handle bottom structure and the fish's sharp teeth. Set the drag firm enough to turn a fish away from bottom structure quickly, and check the leader for abrasion after every hook-up on rough ground.
