The 45FLAG kit pairs Buddy Works' 45HEAD jig head with a FLAG SHAD soft body, and the head is built to hold a 45-degree posture the moment it touches bottom. On the retrieve the shad's tail kicks with a lively, natural wobble, and on stop-and-go work the head's fixed angle keeps the bait looking alive rather than lying flat.

When to throw it

Built for hirame (flatfish) and flounder fishing from Japanese surf beaches and open sandy shorelines, where lures are worked hard along the bottom. It suits any season hirame are active inshore, and works equally on a straight retrieve or a slower lift-and-fall presentation over clean sand or light structure.

How to work it

Retrieve steadily to keep the tail working, or use stop-and-go and lift-and-fall to hold the bait on the bottom between movements — the 45-degree head posture means it will not lie flat and go still during the pause. The 21g head suits the depth and current found across typical surf beach conditions.

The setup it likes

Suits an 8–9'6" surf spinning rod rated for flatfish jigheads, a 3000–4000 size reel, PE 1–1.5 braid (around 20–30 lb) and a 20–25 lb fluorocarbon leader to handle sand and structure abrasion. A slightly stiffer tip helps drive the hook home on the long casts typical of surf fishing for hirame.
