Description

The GEM4.5G / 5.5G is Apia's fall-specialized plug for "wall chinu" fishing — casting to vertical seawalls, harbour walls, river mouths and canals for kurodai (black porgy). Ambassador Shibata built it around the traditional kurodai drop-fishing technique known as otoshikomi, translating that fall-and-pause presentation into a plug: a forward-mounted sinker bites the water for a stable free-fall and tension-fall, letting the lure work a walking retrieve along the wall before dropping again. Its steady fall posture is designed to draw wary kurodai into a deep, unguarded bite, and the body is built durable enough to resist being bitten through by the strong teeth of kurodai and kibire (yellowfin porgy).

This listing is the 5.5g size: 55mm long, sinking, rigged with #12×2 BKK FANGS-62UA hooks.

What makes it different

Built to fish, not just to sell

The swimming action

The GEM works as a sinking wall plug rather than a horizontal swimmer: a forward-mounted sinker gives it a stable, controlled fall on a slack line, and pulling it back into a walking cadence keeps it tracking tight against vertical structure before it drops again.

When to throw it

It suits autumn wall-chinu sessions along harbour walls, seawalls, river mouths and canal edges where black porgy and kibire sit tight to vertical structure. It reads best in calmer water where the fall can be watched and timed, rather than in heavy surf or strong cross-current.

How to work it

Work it with the traditional otoshikomi drop-fishing rhythm: lower it to the wall face, let it free-fall on a taut line, twitch it into a short walking retrieve, then pause and let it fall again. Most bites come on the fall or the pause that follows it.

The setup it likes

A light-to-medium chinu or rock-fishing spinning rod around 7-8ft, a 2500 reel, 6-8lb main line and a short fluorocarbon leader give enough control over the fall while staying light enough to feel a subtle take. This combination keeps the outfit light enough for repeated casting through a full session while leaving enough backbone in reserve to turn a solid fish away from structure.
