Description
SS4-Custom (エスエスフォーカスタム) is Smith's flagship stream bait-finesse rod, three years in development by Hiro Motoyama.
"SS" stands for Super Short and "4" for 4-piece — Motoyama pushed for an even shorter, more portable rod than the BST-HM (2-piece) and BST-EXS (3-piece) lines that preceded it. Despite the added ferrule count, three years of testing on each model's power zone eliminated the usual action loss of a multi-piece rod, giving a wide release-timing window and a supple, resilient feel able to work heavy sinking minnows through the tip-to-belly section.
It uses an all-wood reel seat, chosen to match any reel shape including low-profile baitcasters, plus a fat-and-narrow rear cork grip — both reflecting Motoyama's own preferences developed over roughly two seasons of testing.
4-piece construction; blank material 15t+24t graphite, unsanded finish; guides are Fuji titanium-frame SiC in a small-diameter original setting on all models.

FAQ
What does the power rating (UL, L, M, MH) actually mean?
JDM power letters often run lighter than the same letter on a US or Australian blank. The honest spec is the lure-weight range in grams on each listing — match that to what you throw, and use the letter as a tiebreaker.
How do I read Japanese rod lengths?
Japanese lengths are written in feet and inches as a decimal: 6.6 reads as 6 feet 6 inches, not six-point-six feet.
One-piece or multi-piece for travel?
Two-piece and telescopic travel rods pack shorter and ship more easily. One-piece blanks feel cleaner, but long parcels can attract courier length surcharges and some carriers route them more slowly.
What warranty or service do imported rods have?
There is no local service centre for a JDM rod. Repairs go back to Japan, usually with a fee and a multi-week turnaround — we state that plainly so you can weigh it before you buy.
Will a one-piece rod cost more to ship?
It can. Long parcels attract courier length surcharges on some routes and can move through fewer carriers. Any shipping cost shows at checkout before you pay — no surprises after the order.
