Description

Surfstar J.custom is Palms' rock-shore rod, developed solely for targeting large aomono (blue-back pelagic fish) from rock shores.

Its blank fuses torque-rich stiffness for toughness and power with a smooth bend under load, built to handle the full flow of shore jigging and plugging — cast, jerk, fight and landing — with reliability. The blank uses Toray's T1100G carbon prepreg for high toughness and strength, with a full-cork grip and a custom Palms guide setup running from a #12 top guide to a #40 butt guide. Blanks are built and assembled entirely by craftsmen in Japan.

What makes it different

Built to fish, not just to sell

The blank

A stiff, torque-rich blank built from Toray T1100G carbon prepreg loads with toughness and power but still bends smoothly under load, giving control through the entire fight rather than just at hookset.

What it's built for

Built solely for targeting large aomono (blue-back pelagic fish) from rock shores, where long fights near structure demand a rod that won't fold under sustained pressure.

How it fishes

Handles the full flow of shore jigging and plugging — hard casts, aggressive jerks, and a sustained fight — with a custom Fuji guide train from a #12 top guide down to a #40 butt guide for heavy running line.

The setup it likes

Pair with a large 8000–14000 size spinning reel, 4–8 PE braid with a heavy fluorocarbon leader, and large metal jigs or floating pencils/poppers.

FAQ

What does the power rating (UL, L, M, MH) actually mean?

JDM power letters often run lighter than the same letter on a US or Australian blank. The honest spec is the lure-weight range in grams on each listing — match that to what you throw, and use the letter as a tiebreaker.

How do I read Japanese rod lengths?

Japanese lengths are written in feet and inches as a decimal: 6.6 reads as 6 feet 6 inches, not six-point-six feet.

One-piece or multi-piece for travel?

Two-piece and telescopic travel rods pack shorter and ship more easily. One-piece blanks feel cleaner, but long parcels can attract courier length surcharges and some carriers route them more slowly.

What warranty or service do imported rods have?

There is no local service centre for a JDM rod. Repairs go back to Japan, usually with a fee and a multi-week turnaround — we state that plainly so you can weigh it before you buy.

Will a one-piece rod cost more to ship?

It can. Long parcels attract courier length surcharges on some routes and can move through fewer carriers. Any shipping cost shows at checkout before you pay — no surprises after the order.
