The issei 海太郎 レベリングヘッド早掛 (Umitaro Leveling Head Hayagake) keeps the same horizontal-posture bullet-shaped head as the standard Leveling Head but switches to a short-shank, open-gape hook designed to hook up reliably ("オープンゲイプでとにかく掛かる" — hooks up no matter what) without needing a keeper to hold the worm. It suits both aggressive, suction-biting species like aji and the short, hesitant strikes typical of rockfish such as mebaru, with a large-diameter eye for easy rigging in low light and a sharp point for penetration.
