Description

The Eclipse Rocket Pencil 230 is a magnum walking-pencil topwater bait designed by Eclipse and built by the Akashi lure-building house. It measures 230mm and weighs 4oz, with a through-wire construction and a long-stroke skating action tuned to push a strong wake and carry a fish-attracting rattle.

Its size keeps it in play across a wide range of seabass fields, and Eclipse recommends twin or treble hooks in 3/0-5/0 or a single assist hook in 2/0-4/0.

Information

The swimming action

A through-wire, magnum walking-pencil build gives the Rocket Pencil a long-stroke skating action that pushes a strong wake and carries a fish-attracting rattle, designed to be worked and heard from a distance. The rattle chamber is a deliberate addition over a standard walking pencil, meant to call fish from beyond visual range in the low light or discoloured water where big topwater fishing often happens.

When to throw it

Its size keeps it in play across a wide range of seabass fields, from big river mouths to open coastline, where a large, loud topwater profile is needed to pull fish up from depth or call them across open water.

How to work it

Walk-the-dog it with steady rod-tip sweeps to hold the long-stroke skating rhythm, varying the cadence and adding pauses to break the pattern when fish are following but not yet committing. Because of its size and weight, expect the walk-the-dog rhythm to feel heavier and slower than on a standard-sized pencil, and allow slightly more line slack between sweeps to let it turn properly.

The setup it likes

A heavy-power big-bait or topwater spinning/baitcasting rod, a 4000-5000 reel, PE2-3 braid and a 30-40 lb fluorocarbon leader suit the 230mm, 4oz Rocket Pencil and its 3/0-5/0 hook rigging. Given the size of fish this class of lure typically draws, check hooks, split rings and the through-wire assembly regularly, and land big fish with a net rather than by hand or leader.
