The swimming action

A semi-shallow runner working the 20-60cm band, the Astraia SSR shifts its action with retrieve speed: a fast retrieve produces a 5:5 wobble-to-roll "calling" action, while slowing down shifts it to a 2:8 wobble-to-roll "feeding" action, giving two distinct presentations from one lure.

When to throw it

Suited to rivers, surf and rocky shoreline where seabass sit just under the surface layer, it covers both an active searching retrieve and a slower, more deliberate presentation for fish that need convincing, across a range of pressure levels. Because it holds a mid-shallow band regardless of retrieve speed, it also suits searching new water quickly, letting an angler cover current seams, bridge pilings and drop-offs without constantly adjusting depth.

How to work it

Vary the retrieve speed deliberately rather than settling on one pace: a fast wind draws reaction strikes from active fish, while a slow, steady retrieve switches the action to feeding mode for cautious fish. Treat the first casts on new water as a speed test, alternating fast and slow bursts until the fish show a preference.

The setup it likes

A medium-power seabass spinning rod, a 2500 reel, PE0.6-1 braid and a 10-16 lb fluorocarbon leader match the SSR's size and the #4 hook it's fitted with as standard. A rod with a forgiving tip helps when switching between fast and slow retrieves without pulling the hooks on a light take, particularly on the smaller 99F-SSR fished on lighter leader.

Australia: no duty on orders under A$1,000 and GST is already in the price. US: orders under US$800 clear duty-free. EU and UK: VAT is collected at checkout so nothing is due on delivery for standard orders.
