The swimming action

The Shallow 99F runs a roll-dominant 3:7 wobble-to-roll action tuned to work the 0-20cm surface band, making the most of the flash thrown by its faceted body while keeping wary fish from being put off by too aggressive a wobble.

When to throw it

Built to hold a comfortable surface-hugging range even on a down-and-cross retrieve, in strong current, or worked fast, it suits skinny water, current seams and structure where seabass are feeding right at the surface. It holds up well when other shallow runners are blown off course, making it a reliable choice for gusty surf sessions or fast current seams where depth control usually becomes a problem.

How to work it

It casts as far as the 99F-SSR and holds its shallow lane through a wide range of retrieve speeds and angles, so it can be fished confidently across current without needing constant depth correction. Because the roll-dominant action is forgiving of retrieve angle, it's a good choice for covering awkward-shaped structure where a straight retrieve isn't possible and the lure has to be worked across or against the flow.

The setup it likes

A medium-power seabass spinning rod, a 2500 reel, PE0.6-1 braid and a 10-16 lb fluorocarbon leader suit its 99mm, 12g size and Gamakatsu SP-MH #4 hook. A softer-tipped rod helps protect the standard #4 hook on a sudden strike in the shallows, where fish often hit hard and close to the surface with little warning.
