Description

Daiwa 23 Cygnus (シグナス) is a basic LB (lever brake) spinning reel for ukifukase float fishing, rebuilt around a new monocoque body for improved rotation smoothness, winding power, durability and waterproofing over the previous generation.

It uses a Zaion V body and Zaion brake lever with 5 stainless bearings (2 on the drive gear, 2 on the pinion, 1 on the oscillating gear), Daiwa's ATD automatic drag system (max drag 8kg, max brake force 14kg), and weighs 285g across all sizes. Offered in 2500H, 2500XH, 3000H and 3000XH, with H geared at 6.2:1 (93cm per handle turn) and XH at 6.6:1 (99cm per handle turn).

A Zaion V body and brake lever with 5 stainless bearings gives a smooth, direct feel through the lever-brake mechanism, letting an angler control a running fish under float tackle with fingertip pressure rather than the standard front drag alone.

What it's built for

Built for ukifukase float fishing, a technique widely used around Japan's coast for species such as chinu (black seabream) and other structure-oriented saltwater fish taken on drifting bait under a float. It is best judged against the exact species and situation it is built for, rather than against unrelated fishing styles.

How it fishes

Feed line out under light lever-brake tension as the float drifts, then use the lever to add resistance and control a hooked fish's run rather than relying on a fixed drag setting. Adjust the exact cadence and pace to water clarity, current strength and how actively the fish are feeding on the day.

Spools and spares

Pair with a float (uki) rod suited to the venue, monofilament float-fishing line, and standard chinu or general float-rig terminal tackle. Adjust the final line and leader choice to venue and season, erring heavier wherever structure or fish size demands it.
